“Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God; For it is pleasant and praise is becoming.” Psalm 147:1

As a young boy I had a favorite place I would retreat to when things weren’t going well. When there were problems at school, or difficulty with family or friends, I would climb this incredibly tall oak tree to its very top, and sit there above things sensing the breeze. Among the security of the branches I would contemplate what to do. For some reason, up there, I gained more than just a clearer view of the surrounding landscape, but a better perspective on my circumstances as well. On one very difficult day when I just wanted to give up, there was carried on the wind from miles away the sound of the University of Missouri marching band rehearsing the school fight song for an upcoming football game. That song was all I needed to gain new energy to press through my situation. It was like a prophecy to me telling me to press on to victory.
Praise does the same thing for me today. It allows me to be raised up above present difficulties, focusing my attention on God, and puts me in the best perspective to hear from Him. And, as the scriptures state, praise is not only pleasant, it is “becoming.” It makes me look better as well as see better.

God bless your week,

A good message written by Michael Felton…..

Luke 15: 20

“So the son left and went to his father. While the son was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt sorry for his son. So the father ran to him and hugged and kissed him.”

You could write or teach for months on the parable of the prodigal son.

But God put on my heart just three words out of the 21-verse story to teach me about my too often small, but needed willingness and His awesome power to more than split the difference.

Last Friday I was running a bit empty and wasn’t long on willingness, but I did a small thing. I showed up. A local group meets Friday morning at 6 a.m. for prayer and worship. And too often when I show up somewhere at 6 a.m. I don’t bring much but a body. But the Lord took that bit of willingness, a step in obedience toward Him, and poured His power and blessing on it and turned it into a wonderful morning of praise, gratitude, thanksgiving, fellowship with others, and a lesson.

It reminded me of this passage in the story of the prodigal son. After squandering everything and finding himself in deep mud, the son started back in the direction of his father. And while he was a long way, his father saw him. The fact that the father spotted the son while he was a distance away implies the father continued to keep faithful watch for his wayward son’s return, and that is often pointed out in the parable teaching how Our Father watches patiently and faithfully for His children to repent and return to Him.

But look also how once the Father sees the willingness, how He sprints and more than makes up the difference to welcome the child, bring Him home, restore and bless Him.

The Lord never changes and remains holy, but do not mistake it for stagnant. He is jealous for you, actively watches for you to come to Him and eagerly rushes to be with you.

Remember that this week, especially if you find that you have wandered off a bit or are running on empty. Take a step toward prayer, or worship, or into God’s word, or a quiet time of writing and devotion, or take a new opportunity to serve and love others in His name and watch the Father move powerfully to make all the difference.

Love,
Boomer

“Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Running such a way that you may win.” 1 Corinthians 9:24

“You become a champion by fighting one more round. When things are tough, you fight one more round.” (James Corbett)
Boxers know the importance of a strong finish. They know that many fights are won or lost in the final rounds. Uzziah made a splendid start when he became King at age 16. ( 2 Chronicles 26:1) Through his faithfulness to God, he restored his nation to honor and glory. Then he became proud and believed that the rules no longer applied to him, and this is where we can learn from his mistakes.
Uzziah entered the temple to burn incense—a privilege restricted to the priests. Even when confronted about his sin, he arrogantly refused to listen. Uzziah stumbled before the finish
line. He was disqualified. Instead of a record of great victories, he left his throne in disgrace.
King Uzziah doesn’t stand alone in history. Uzziah like many people for want of self-restraint are engaged in fighting with difficulties of their own making.
If things are difficult now, be determined to not give up, give in, or give out. God has chosen you to be his champion and wants to showcase you in victory. Give your best from beginning to end.

God bless,

Pastor Bob

“Then I looked again at all the acts of oppression which were being done under the sun. And behold I saw the tears of the oppressed and that they had no one to comfort them; and on the side of their oppressors was power, but they had no one to comfort them.” Eccl. 4:1

I remember my first encounter in elementary school with a bully who felt it was his right to take from me my lunch money. He wasn’t satisfied with what he had, but in a perverted sense enjoyed taking from others to feed his own insecurity. The Bible tells of bullies who lived before the flood of Noah. They were called the Nephilim – a word which means “those who cause others to fall down.” During their reign of terror, “the earth was filled with violence.’ Genesis 6:4,11-13. They were the primary reason that God had to send the flood upon the earth. It proves the fact that most bullies cannot be appeased because that only satisfies their purpose for acting like a bully in the first place, and usually guarantees that their mistreatment of their victim will not only continue, but become more severe. The worldwide increase of this behavior is another sign that it will not be long before God sends His Son back to the earth to bring final justice and comfort to the afflicted. Until then, we have a great task of bringing peace and aid to those who have been on the receiving end of arrogant selfishness. May God grant us the ability to heal the many people who have been abused both physically as well as psychologically through insults, sarcasm, ridicule, and name-calling.

May God bless you this week,

God promised the people of Israel that He would be their protector. He saw them as His children and as long as they would trust Him they would have the security that He could provide. This fact is no less true for the Christian today. The Father loves those who have taken His Son’s name and will protect them with the same passion any loving parent would display towards those who would do their children harm. In a world that seems full of constant threat, there remains the wonderful confidence knowing that God is our vigilant sentry.

If you have ever wondered if God knows what it is like to be deeply troubled, this passage should give the answer. The mere anticipation of all that the crown of thorns would bring caused his forehead to break forth in blood. Before the thorns pierced the skin his head was throbbing with the pains, fears, doubts, loneliness, agony, and every other feeling that would come with the sin of all the world. What would begin in the garden of Gethsemane would culminate in a crown that would make Him King of all our pain and grief. Darkness would be the robe of His royalty as He bore our sin. Yes, He knows all that we feel, and much more. Because He does, we know peace, a peace that truly passes our understanding.
