“And I said to them, “Whoever has any gold, let them tear it off.” So they gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf.” Now when Moses saw that the people were out of control–for Aaron had let them get out of control to be a derision among their enemies-,” Ex. 32:24-25
It is amazing to what extent we can go to in order to not tell the truth. Here Aaron expects Moses to believe that he had really nothing to do with the children of Israel building a golden calf to worship during his leadership. He wanted Moses to think that all he did was take the peoples’ gold and throw it in the fire, and presto, out came this golden calf which they worshipped.
The truth was, that he fashioned the calf in the same way he concocted this lie, and neither would get them where they wanted to go.
Two things I have learned when it comes to lying. First, it never ceases to amaze me what people think you will believe even in the face of obvious evidence. Secondly, it’s amazing what people will believe in spite of the evidence.
The most difficult challenge we face may well be to speak the truth in love, without compromising truth for love, or love for truth. Anything can be wonderfully, securely built if it’s cornerstone is truth. Nothing can be built with stability or security with upon lie.
If you want to follow the Lord and have His peace, desire earnestly to speak truth, and to have ears that will not listen, or believe anything less than the truth. A person who speaks the truth doesn’t have to try to remember what he or she has previously said.
