” Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; but I buffet my body and make it may slave, lest possibly, after I have preached to others, I myself should be disqualified.” 1Cor. 9:25-26
It doesn’t take much to see the obsession with physical fitness.
There are fitness clubs, advertisements for healthy eating, and a who knows how many self-help diet and fitness books, along with infomercials regarding each new home exercise gadget. The most amazing thing is not that people are exercising and dieting more, but rather that we seem to be in worse shape than ever.
It has been stated that the reason for this rests squarely with the two words intention and attention. We seem always to have every intention of getting into shape but we don’t. We say we are going to pay attention to the details of diet and exercise but we don’t.
Let’s face it, the proof is in the little consistent details and the fact that change doesn’t happen overnight. It takes a multitude of small disciplines repeated daily in order for us to have success. The big changes we want, come from the small daily decisions to be obedient to what we know to be right. This is the life of a disciple who has learned to follow the Lord and His truth.
Paul used the training of an athlete as an example of the rewards of a disciplined life. “They do it to receive an imperishable wreath, but we an imperishable.” (V.25)
Victory in spiritual or physical matters begin with intention, and are completed through attention to the little details.
Love,
Pastor Bob
